From the Super;
The spring has arrived and we have opened the course for play. Due to a kind New England winter, the course has fared well through the cold months. As early players can attest, the greens have done well, as has the entire course. This is attributable to the warmer than normal season, but more specifically the green covers which we began to use a few years ago. They have proven to be a wise investment.
We removed several pine trees surrounding the 2nd, and in particular the 7th green over the winter. I anticipate that this will improve the turf quality and the performance of those greens significantly. Additionally, we will be planting a few low growing fruit trees in their stead. You will also notice a few new elm trees on the course that will be installed in April.
With the early opening of the course we are going to aerify the greens five weeks earlier than normal. This process will begin on Monday April 2 and will necessitate the course closure during this time. The course (and all greens) will re-open on Friday April 6th. I know many are anxious to play, but this will allow us to get an early jump on the season without any further aerification until the fall.
We have also begun improvements to drainage in the bunkers and a few other wet areas of the course. We will be doing this work throughout April.
As always, thank you for your continued support and understanding as we work to improve Portsmouth Country Club for you and your guests.
Sincerely,
Gregory DuBois Jr.
